Charlotte Wood Middle School, Danville, California

It was 1991, and our company was framing the entire middle school. The Charlotte Wood Middle School was built out of Douglas Fir Lumber, Pressure Treated Plates, and different kinds of Plywood. I negotiated a contract with a lumber mill in Oregon to provide all the dimensional lumber for the project. I had lumber being delivered from their mill for months. GREAT PROJECT! Indoor Projects

A standard 2x4x8 board can be used for a wide variety of indoor home improvement and DIY projects. Common uses include garage shelving, benches, storage racks, work tables, wall framing, utility rooms, closet systems, and workshop projects. Because dimensional lumber is affordable and easy to work with, it remains one of the most popular materials for homeowners, beginners, and contractors alike.

Outdoor projects

  • For outdoor applications, 2x4 lumber is commonly used for planter boxes, raised garden beds, small patio furniture, fencing repairs, pergolas, utility structures, and backyard projects. Exterior projects should always be properly sealed, painted, or protected from long-term moisture exposure to help extend the life of the wood and reduce weather-related deterioration.

Before you begin

  • Before starting any project, carefully inspect lumber for warping, twisting, splitting, or excessive knots. Straighter boards are generally easier to work with and produce better final results. Allow lumber to acclimate to the environment before installation whenever possible, especially for interior projects. For outdoor use, properly seal or protect exposed lumber to help improve long-term durability and performance.
