A Personal Story About Work, Life… and What Happens Next

Every morning, for years, I drove to work and passed the same streets. Streets lined with people who had no home to go to. Most of them didn’t choose that life. Some struggled with health.
Some with addiction.
Some just got caught in circumstances they couldn’t escape.

I remember thinking to myself:

“I’m blessed.”

I had a job.
I had a home.
I had a family.

And I truly believed…

👉 That could never be me.

A Life Built the Right Way. I’m 75 years old now. I’ve had a good life — a very good life.

I married my best friend, Sue. We’ve been married 56 years now… but I met her 4 years before that. She’s been by my side through everything. When I was young, I had a plan. I earned a degree in Law Enforcement because I wanted to be a police officer.

But my dad gave me advice I never forgot. He said: “Son… get a trade. If something happens to you out there, you’ll always be able to provide for your family.” So I listened. I became an apprentice carpenter through the local union.

And my dad taught me something else too: “Work steadily… and keep at it.” “Never be afraid of working hard.” I still remember one day digging a ditch, exhausted, sweating like crazy. I told him, “Dad… I think I’m leaking.” He smiled and said: “Don’t worry, son… that’s just sweet.”

Choosing a Different Path By the time I finished:

I had a 4-year degree
I was a Journeyman Carpenter

And believe it or not…

👉 Carpentry turned out to be more exciting than law enforcement. I went into construction full time. Over the years, I became an owner and part-owner of construction companies.

I worked hard. I provided for my family. I built something I was proud of. And like most people… 👉 I never really thought about retirement. I figured I’d always keep working.

Then Life Changed A couple of years ago… I was diagnosed with cancer. That changes everything. I went through a stem cell transplant. By God’s grace, today the doctors say I’m cancer-free. And I’m thankful for that every single day. But here’s something people don’t tell you… 👉 Even when you recover… things are not the same.

Your energy changes.
Your memory changes.
Your ability to work the way you used to… changes. I thought I would bounce back and go right back to work. But the reality hit me. 👉 That chapter of my life was closing.

The Truth About Retirement Let me be honest with you. When you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, even your 50s… You don’t really think about retirement.

You think:

“I’ll be fine.”
“I’ve worked hard.”
“I’ve saved enough.”

I thought the same thing.

But after I stepped away from work… Reality showed up fast.

The cost of:

food
gas
insurance
utilities

…kept going up.

And my savings?

👉 They started going down faster than I ever expected.

For the first time in my life… I had a thought that shook me:

👉 “What if we run out?”

Even worse…

👉 “What if we lose everything?”

The same streets I used to drive past……didn’t feel so far away anymore.
