Charlotte Wood Middle School, Danville, California

It was 1991, and our company was framing the entire middle school. The Charlotte Wood Middle School was built out of Douglas Fir Lumber, Pressure Treated Plates, and different kinds of Plywood. I negotiated a contract with a lumber mill in Oregon to provide all the dimensional lumber for the project. I had lumber being delivered from their mill for months. GREAT PROJECT! Indoor and Outdoor Design Projects

With an 16-foot-long Douglas Fir (DF) board, you can build a wide variety of projects, from structural framing to DIY furniture and backyard items. Dimensional lumber is ideal for a wide range of structural and nonstructural applications including framing of houses, barns, sheds and commercial construction.

  • Common: 2-in x 4-in x 16-ft; actual: 1.5-in x 3.5-in x 16-ft

  • Top Choice is Lowe's exclusive mark of quality lumber due to the fact that it is hand selected to be square straight solid and strong

  • Framing studs are ideal for a wide range of uses from framing of houses to basic interior structural applications

  • Studs can be primed and painted or sealed and stained to fit all your construction needs

Indoor projects

  • Benches and stools: A 2x4 can be used as a simple bench seat or for crafting durable legs for a rustic table or stool.

  • Shelving: Create strong, floating shelves or a modular shelf unit for a garage or pantry.

  • Side tables: A simple side or end table for your couch or bed is an excellent beginner project.

  • Coat and key racks: A simple, stylish way to organize your entryway is by creating a functional rack with a few cuts.

  • Decorative boxes: You can cut the board into smaller pieces to create small storage or decorative boxes for various uses around the house.

  • Coffee tables: An easy-to-build coffee table can be made using 2x4 boards, which is a great beginner project.

Outdoor projects

  • Planter boxes: Douglas Fir is naturally resistant to decay, making it suitable for creating durable planter boxes for your garden.

  • Raised garden beds: A single 2x4x16 board is the perfect length for a smaller, rectangular raised garden bed.

  • Outdoor furniture: Build durable outdoor benches, side tables, or a small patio table for your deck or yard.

  • Yard games: Cut the boards into oversized pieces for outdoor games like yard dice or giant dominoes.

  • Pergolas and landscaping: In construction, Douglas Fir is used for structural applications like pergolas, posts, and railings.

  • Fencing and posts: Depending on the grade, DF lumber can be used for fence components, as long as it is properly sealed for exterior applications.

Before you begin

  • Check the grade: The best project for your board depends on its grade. For instance, a clear, high-grade DF board is great for furniture, while a lower-grade board is fine for structural applications or rustic outdoor projects where knots and other imperfections are acceptable.

  • Condition the wood: Kiln-dried Douglas Fir is more consistent and stable, but you should still allow the wood to acclimate to your environment before building, especially in California's variable climate.

  • Finish for exterior use: For any outdoor project, be sure to properly prime, paint, or seal the lumber to protect it from California's weather.

Ask Rick, example:“What’s the best plywood for subfloors? or “When should I use treated lumber instead of regular lumber?”
