Whether you're planting in pots on a balcony or tending raised beds in the backyard, the gardening season is here—and it's full of possibility.

"Seeds and Steel"

The morning air was still cool as Janelle stepped onto her back patio, notebook in one hand, hot tea in the other. The bare garden beds sat quiet, like blank canvases waiting for her brushstrokes of green.

She took a slow sip, eyes scanning the yard. It’s time, she thought. Time to get my hands dirty again.

Flipping open her notebook, she started jotting ideas. First, the essentials:
Tomatoes, zucchini, bell peppers, basil. Maybe even try cucumbers this year—if she could figure out how to keep the rabbits out.

Then she moved to her supply list. Her old raised beds needed reinforcing—she’d need some cedar planks, deck screws, and a cordless drill. She made a note to check the charge on her lithium battery packs too.

She'd definitely need new gardening gloves—last year’s pair had holes in the fingertips. And her wheelbarrow had a flat tire. She underlined that.

She pictured herself with her spade, carving rows in the soil, and remembered the backache from last season. A kneeling bench with side handles would help. Maybe even a garden seat with wheels for easier movement between beds.

She scribbled:

• Compost & topsoil (2 bags each)

• Organic fertilizer

• Soaker hose with a programmable timer

• Garden clippers and trellis netting

• Plant markers and a labeling pen

Then came the fun part—heirloom seeds. She already had a cart full online: Brandywine tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, purple carrots.

Janelle set her notebook down and smiled. Spring hadn’t fully arrived yet, but she could already feel it in her bones. The hum of bees, the smell of turned soil, the joy of watching something grow from nothing.

This year, she’d be ready. Not just with seeds—but with the tools to make the garden thrive.
